The Galaxy Beta Mac installer requires you to type an administrator password. This grants superuser (sudo) access, and should not be necessary in most cases. An admin user has full write access to the /Applications folder without requiring a password. A non-admin user has full write access to their ~/Library and ~/Applications folders without requiring a password. You should first detect whether you have the needed access to the paths you need, and then ask for a password ONLY if absolutely necessary. It is bad practice to give superuser (sudo) privileges to software that does not need it. I trust that GOG's intentions are good, but unforeseen bugs may allow the software to do things with the privileges that were not intended and possibly destructive, amongst other reasons: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principle_of_least_privilegeViolating this principle is the norm in the Windows world, but not so much on the Mac and other Unixes. Some developers are under the mistaken impression that all OS X installers must ask for a password. This is not the case.In fact, it is usually not necessary to use an installer at all. I will file a separate wish to distribute Galaxy without an installer.
This is a huge and unnecessary security flaw. I have no reason whatsoever to trust that GOG Galaxy isn't compromised, and the fact that it requests god mode just to play a game suggests that the developers are not security aware, making it more likely than not that they or their machines are also compromised.I won't be able to use GOG Galaxy at all until this is fixed. They also do not sign and notarize their macOS .pkg installers/.app bundles for individual games. This would not be a particularly difficult thing to set up in their CI/CD release pipelines, and would also be helpful from a security and usability point of view. I have to manually "unquarantine" each game installer I download before installing it, which feels a bit odd.The experience of GOG as a mac user overall is pretty poor so far, not sure it's worth buying any more games until these things are resolved.
This is still an issue. The GOG app took years to become Apple Silicon native. Now they need to remove any need for admin. Steam doesn't need it!
I bought the game and now I can't play it because it asks for my root password, I will not input my password for any application that is not coming with the operating system, I'm on a Mac!!!
GOG installs a privileged helper application for some reason which is why it needs admin access. The whole GOG application needs to be re-written since there’s nothing it does that requires a privileged helper application.
If they need admin for certain features, they could ask only when the user tries to enable those specific features.
They are installing launchdaemon com.gog.galaxy.clientservice.plist into /Library/LaunchDaemons. Owner ship is root:wheel -> they need root rights for installation. My Problem is with installer package itself. They do not use installer package properly since they install everything with bash postinstall script which is bad practice.
For what it's worth, this is just how the pkg installer always behaves. The way to avoid it is to ship a disk image with just an app bundle, which means changing the way your install concept works a bit more from windows.
