This post is meant to inform everyone that it is possible to play Morrowind on GNU/Linux.

OpenMW has completely rewritten Morrowind's engine, and it's compatible with GNU/Linux.
I have been using it and it works perfectly.

Linux mint / Ubuntu / Debian installation:
sudo apt-get install openmw-launcher

Arch, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Fedora, OSX & Windows:
https://openmw.org/downloads/

Even if you have Windows, its still a good idea to use OpenMW because the original Morrowind engine is very dated.

You can get Morrowind here: https://www.gog.com/game/the_elder_scrolls_iii_morrowind_goty_edition

Yes, its a great project. Is it feature complete yet though? Last time I looked there were a fair few things pending?

Its fully playable, I have been playing for like a week now and haven't encountered a single bug yet.
In fact I read it has less bugs than the original Morrowind.

Also I haven't seen any missing features.
Maybe the only thing that is lacking are the mod tools.

You can basically consider it as being of the same quality of a day-one Bethesda release. It's complete and perfectly playable, but dragons are going to turn into giant elastic bands that fly into space and NPCs are going to behave a bit weirdly, plus a few other teeny tiny issues here and there. The main focus at the moment is fixing the much smaller things, like stats and spell interactions so they fit vanilla MW perfectly. There's also good compatibility for many mods already.

Personally having not played MW before I'm waiting for version 1.0 or close to it before I start, but if you're less anal than I am or have played the game before, OpenMW is already perfectly fine for you to play it again with.

You can consider it day one release + the official patch.
OpenMW has less bugs than the original Morrowind at the moment and it performs better.

I have a dual core 3.3GHz & GTX 650 so its a low end PC.
Even though its low end I have no cell loading, so OpenMW is a lot faster than the original Morrowind.

what exactly does openmw improve upon compared to the original ( hideous) morrowind ?

edit :
tried it
the graphics are still as hideous as ever
especially the mutant monsters the game tries to pass off as npc's

the thing i first noticed is that the game loads a lot faster

I've been waiting to hear this was complete enough. Now that it is I might end up playing again. God I sucked a good 100+ hours in that game, perhaps starting over would work.

How bad the character models are always strikes me too after not playing it for years.

The rest of the visuals and performance you get out of OpenMW is pretty great though. And less work than modding the shit out of the original release to accomplish the same effect.

True... The majority of the time I spent in Morrowind in the last... 8 years or so, is programming tools, and mostly loading the games up to make sure the records work with the game.

It's version .39. Their still aiming at a 1.0 release "someday"

0.40 actually came out recently. You may have missed it.

I'm pretty confident a 1.0 could be this year, but it's pretty much as good as already as has been discussed.

yeah the npc's are hideously ugly
which is odd when you consider that the environments are gorgeous
but the npc's and creatures ie what you look at most of the time
look like the love child from a skeksis and the sumatran rat monkey from brain dead

the animations are fairly rubbish too

i only tried openmw briefly but the game loads almost instantly which is most impressive

i usually play oblivion modded up to the hilt
with new quests
i only really play the dark brotherhood from the original quests anymore
and even that is kinda dull

No, not yet. It's the promotional video that got leaked. The 0.40 itself is not released officially by the team.

Well I suppose I could pull up my Malcomb character, and resume where I left off. Beating the expansion questline. Although I'm more tempted to keep my level/stats and start a new game, but then the challenge early on is gone. Hmmm...

Reminds me of a mod I made which let you go over 100 for skill points and stats, giving you 2/3 of your points as enchantment points, also as a way to disable them to heal against stat damage.
