Lovely Game In Early Access
I'm new to tactical turn based games so I'll leave it to veterans to comment on this. I needed to start a new game a couple of times and consult the wiki and youtube to get the hang of things. It's fun. "My missions" typically take around 40 minutes to complete but I've started approaching the side objective of completing a mission in 10 turns a couple of times.
The weapons, character skills, and various "perks" seem well thought out to me. Initially I was getting steamrolled but things are starting to improve as utilize strengths of certain Squad Leaders and hide weakness of other squad leaders through various means and situations.
The humor is enjoyable and each voice character brings their Squad Leader to life. The deaths of Squad Leaders genuinely made me feel sad. Missions results have an impact on Squad Leader mood in a RimWorld sort of way and these moods have an impact on how your Squad Leaders perform. So being their for the ups and downs of your men and women and see one of them die hurts. Rest in Power homies.
The thing I'm most interested to see develop in the game is how the narrative unfolds. The small pieces are there, but I wonder if more cutscenes will be added in the future. It's possible I haven't made it far enough in the game to see a new cutscene (LMFAO).
As of writing this review their is no "undue" action button. I do find this charming in a rouge-like kind of way. If you aren't good enough to progress to see more of the game you got to get better by studying the wiki, watching youtube videos, and building up your strength and discipline. However, I do think this makes the narrative of the play through suffer. I'm unsure if different lower difficulties introduce this feature or not. I'm playing on Normal.
I come from playing First and Third Person Shooters heavy (Tom Clancy, CS, etc.). If have this background in gaming I recommend this game to you!
