Vampire: The Masquerade® - Bloodlines™ 2

Just not worth it

To call this a Role-Playing game is the same as calling Need For Speed a PC racing sim. It might stick to some naive people, but not everyone. The name Bloodlines is in the tittle just so Paradox can take out from you some extra bucks in the price tag, and you know this. So what is left? Is this at least a good game? The short and dry answer is no. In terms of gameplay mechanics, melee combat based first person games are usually not good, and this one doesn't benefit from the lack of weapon inventory management system. Also, the game environment is very dark, which is offcourse needed for immersion, but it also makes the short range combat difficult and disorienting. Talking about the "action", combat sections are just to feel in between the walking and dialog sections, and boy, how more uninteresting could these dialogs be? It's a slow pace game, with weak dialogs, which don't help to build the set for the game. This is a killer! The flashback sections are a poor choice to tell the story, as they take the focus out from the game protagonist, and slow down even more the pacing, also cutting your engagement with the game. Making the main protagonist an elder was a smart move, totally wasted by not exploring better the character background, and the challenges of an elder vampire facing a moden world. And talking about characters, the Nosferatu and Makavians in this game were written by someone who never even read about these kindred. Shameful! Finally, immersion is key in this kind of game, but the snow and fog doesn't let you have a better view of Seattle as a city at night, which is another bad choice, making the streets look all the same. As you can see, I'm not reviewing this game from an RPG point of view, but based in its features as a game, and they are dreadful. Don't waste your time in this one.

Kerbal Space Program

Ground Control to Major Tom

Great game, lots of fun on sandbox if you like dealing with physics and building rockets. Many people complain about the game difficulty, but if you were paying attention to the school physics classes you will at least be able reach orbit. If you like mods, then it gets even better. The best sites to download mods are CurseForge and SpaceDock. You don't need Steam Workshop for this game. Also, you can download CKAN and have all your mods managed through it, which is quite handy. Just be carefull, because CKAN keeps recomending you new mods, and it never ends :) BTW, don't forget to check the Parallax Continued mod, as it totally changes the game environment. Also, if you want to spend some extra money and support modding development, you can get Volumetric Clouds, which gives this old game a significant "facelift". To complete the package, no bloody launcher what so ever here on GOG. What else can we ask for?

SimCity™ 4 Deluxe Edition

It didn't age quite well

SimCity 4 was lots of fun back in the day, but reality is that the game didn't age well. When compared to Cities Skylines, this game has better mechanics, despite its bugs. Sound track is better in my opinion and budget management style is more direct to the point and intuitive. Building the city's road network system is another story. I don't consider neither this or CS good in this side. Both games have mods to help you, but it's quite a nightmare to get something done right. Simtropolis is the main mod page for SimCity 4, and you can get Network Addon Mod to give a try. In terms of graphics, this game already shows its age, but the biggest issue is the game UI, which can't be upscaled. You can run this game with Widescreen Resolution and SweetFX, however the UI will get smaller, as the resolution gets higher. My best recommendation, if you are running it in a 1080p monitor is to use the guide I've shared on Steam, called "Graphical Tweaks with Mod for better UI" It will help you to get the most out of this game in terms o graphical settings, Moving forward... in the past I've considered the cash grab called Cities Skylines, with mods offcouse, as the best alternative to SimCity 4. Reality is that I've tried again both games now, and found them both to be unplayable, each due to its own issues. Maybe I'm getting older, maybe CitySim games are not what they used to be. I will leave to you to decide.

Freedom Planet

Sonic's younger cousin

"Dedicated to the memory of John Bain (TotalBiscuit), who recommended me this game." When you start playing Freedom Plane it’s like meeting a new friend who reminds you of very good old friends. But even very good friends can get annoying once and a while. Time do clean the dust out of that old game pad and get ready for a very fun platformer, which will take you back to the old days of the 16 bit video game consoles! The good: - Level designs are one of the best I’ve seen and don’t get repetitive, as you will always find new different things in each level along your game progression - Running a second and third time thru the levels feels really rewarding, and you can find new areas and collectibles such as sound track and sketch designs - Good replay ability if you like exploring levels - Characters design and aesthetic are great and fit very well the game - Character movements and animations are very "fluid" and well done - Lilac (the main character) is very cool to play with, by having a good range of moves, making her distinct from Sonic, Mega Man, or any other character I‘ve played - Carol looks cool to play with (played for 30 minutes only in Classic), in a totally different style when compared to Lilac, so it’s another learning curve to get to play well with her - Characters don’t have upgrades or improvements / development along the game, so all you need to worry about is to learn how to take the most of their abilities, and believe me you will need as the bosses get tougher along the way - Sound track is really cool and fits well the game style and aesthetic - The story is nothing to blow your mind, but does its job well by keeping you engaged with the characters - Cut scenes are between stages, so there is no break in your gameplay while running thru the levels (each stage is composed of a few levels) - The game rewards you for exploring the levels and being bold, as long as you do remember you are not playing Sonic and learn to play each character in their strengths - You can save your progression after each stage, which for me it was very handy to be able to give a break and decompress from some boss fights (I’m not 13 years old anymore, by a few decades) - Game worked very well with Xbox 360 controller (USB), and a Buffalo Super Nintendo clone (USB), being the second one the best to play with The bad: - Boss fights are the usual try and error, until you memorize their moving pattern, something I didn’t really enjoy back in the day - Cut scenes from Adventure mode are quite long and can get boring sometimes, luckily you can skip them or play the Classic (Arcade) mode without any cut scene - Some voice overs are quite odd and don’t fit well in the game cut scenes, like if they were recorded in different section, without any interaction between the actors (listening to the main villain made me want to watch Spaceballs once again, you will know why) - No in game graphic options to adjust the screen to the player preferred style, so I had to use SweetFX 2.0 to make it look the way it felt more comfortable to me. Feel free to get my pre-set from SweetFX Settings DB The ugly: - There is a short level by the end of the game, in the side scrolling shooter style, not really fitting into the game genre (at least it’s very short) - Boss fights get very intense by the end of the game (Stage 8 and final), with one boss coming after the other, so levels can’t be enjoyed very well as they become more of a transition between bosses I’ve played Mario, Alex Kidd, Sonic, Mega Man and Maga Man X back in the day. Freedom planet is a very enjoyable game if you are looking for something in the line of Sonic and Mega Man X. I’ve started playing Lilac like if she was Sonic, and got a little disapointed at first, until I realized she has her own style, which in my opinion is really cool to play with. If it wasn’t for the intense boss fights at the end, this game would be a master piece in terms of gameplay, at least for my personal taste. In comparison to the classics from the 16 bit consoles, this game doesn’t fall behind, and I surely do recommend for anyone looking for a good platformer!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Complete Pack

Totally worth as a complete package

Give me a thumbs up if you have named your squad after Aliens movie characters and/or Gi Joe's! Don't expect a deep management level of resources and base, like we had in UFO Defense. Unfortunately, someone thought the deep management layer of the game was not needed, which in my opinion was a great mistake. I do understand some people never liked having to control and order ammo clips for the guns, but reality is that this added a lot to immersion. You can try the Long War mod, as people say it's a way to get closer to the original XCOM, however I see it as a mod which brings back some issues from the original game, such as the terrible aiming/shooting roulet. That was quite frustrating in UFO Defense's early game. I would say that the one thing which bothers me the most in this game is the scripted missions in early game. If you re-start the game a few times and play through the initial 5 hours, you will notice this clearly. Also, if you come from Ufo Defense, the combat system will feel simplistic, and this is not only because there aren't time units to be managed anymore. For instance, you can't throw grenades from one soldier to another to reach a far away target, as they explode when hit the ground. Hardly, you will be able to use a soldier to take down a wall so another one can shot down an alien, and save your soldier which went too far into the building without backup. You will never open a door in the upper deck of a very large alien ship with a blaster launcher to take your best soldiers directly to the bridge to capture the alien commander. There are several small things about the combat system which were quite fun in Ufo Defense, and pushed our creativity in combat, but can never happen in this game. Anyways, about the up side, XCOM does get much better with its expansion Enemy Within, as this will add more features to the base game, giving extra stuff to manage and experiment. Out of the door, MEC Troopers are very cool to play with, and the new Meld mechanics give a boost to the regular soldiers. I do recommend making Meld enhanced soldiers and psionics mutually exclusive, as this will push you towards a better use of your resources, increasing the challenge. There is also the addition of a human faction antagonizing you, called Exalt. Some people didn't like this content, but I do think it fits well into the game story. XCOM graphics are good, and should easily run in maximum settings at any rig in 2026, however I do recommend the use of Reshade/SweetFX to make colors more vivid. Game can look much better with this post-processing mod. Sound track and voice over are also good. I can listen to the XCOM base music for hours, although it's not as good as UFO Defense in my opinion. In terms of modding, I don't recommend increasing squad size. Game is not really designed for this, as there are some recurrent easy missions in mid/late game to allow you to develop rookies into better soldier. With MEC Troopers and Meld Enhance Soldiers, bigger squad can bring too much unbalance to the gameplay. Final veredict: XCOM Enemy Unkown vanilla: meh XCOM with Enemy Within: good game Enemy Within with mods: now we are talking... Just for reference, these are the mods I use in the game: Additional Item Slots (Amineri Edition) - Note: this one can cause some game bugs Realistic Base Layout Commander's Choice Concerning the Medal's Market Corpses Destroy Time Soldier XP, PsiXP and Mobility in Barracks and in Battle Geoscape Pause on Notifications Hologlobe Rotation Fix Larger Alien Pods Meld Mechanics Reworked Nationality Probability Tweaker Soldier Gender Probability Soldier Purchase Bugfix Interception UFO Damage Display Keep in mind that modding the game can bring unbalance, which might or might not be what you are looking for.

Wasteland 2 Director's Cut Digital Deluxe Edition

Great RPG mechanics, bad story

It starts well, but only that. I really wanted to like this game, I mean it. After so many years waiting for a game which could carry on the torch of old Fallout games, Wasteland 2 came as a promising one. Off course I know all the story involving the IP, which led Interplay to create Fallout, so this is not the point of my review. Wasteland 2 has good graphical and sound design, which is key for immersion in this post-apocalyptic RPG world. The RPG game system is a masterpiece, just like the old Fallout games. If you get to play this game, you will laugh out loud of today’s adventure games which claim to have RPG elements. They are a joke. The initial 2 to 3 hours of game play have that good RPG vibe. So, what is the issue with Wasteland 2? Some people will say the forced situation to push you to make hard choices and sacrifice some to save others. Don't worry, no spoil here. I got to say this really didn't bother me. It's a game design feature, and if well used it can be quite fun. For myself, the problem with Wasteland 2 is that it relies too much in the story set up by Wasteland 1. Way too much. I've expected this game to put something new to the table in terms of story and world development, but the game really falls short in this side, and get boring after a while. As an example I can quote the amount of information related to the Rangers' (specially Vargas) background, which you can read thru the game, but not enough about some followers we find along the way. It's wasted potential here, as some of the followers look quite interesting, and have more relevance to the game play than the Citadel Rangers. I've played thru the first part of the game a few times (vanilla + DC), trying different approaches to situations, recruiting everyone I could, talking to everyone, exploring as much as I could to try to find something interesting. I've tried to find something which could push me forward to explore more and find more about this post-apocalyptic world. Key point for an RPG game is to get the player engaged. Unfortunately, many of the areas are forgettable, NPC’s are boring, and story arcs are uninteresting. It looks to me the objective of this first part of the game is to get you involved with the “Wasteland folk”, so the stakes get higher when you got to take the hard decisions to save the world. This doesn’t happen. Pulling story arcs from Wasteland 1 and pushing it thru Wasteland 2 was a bad decision, as many players never played Wasteland 1, so the NPC’s back story feel pointless loose ends. On the top of that, shadows don't work on the Director's Cut version of the game, forcing you to turn them off if you don't want to have very annoying stuttering at some areas. Some people might say this is not a big deal, well... each one is entitle to an opinion, but to me it's immersion breaking. Another anoying thing, which is also quite immersion breaking, is the "encounter beggins" screen at the begining of every combat. It pulls you out of the game. Give a try if you want, but be aware it's a game with many flaws. I still do prefer playing Fallout 1, even with the dated graphics, even with all its flaws.

Full Throttle Remastered

Hi-Octane point and click

"For my brother, keep moving forward dude!" Full Throttle and I go way back, so this review will have a few flash back moments. I never actually had this game until I got here on Steam. My brother had it on CD-ROM, so I got to play it several times, but the son of a gun never gave me or sold me his game, until he finally lost it. Game was launched in 1995, and I do recall watching its opening at a store in a VGA monitor. Quite a shock as it was fast paced, voice acted, with great sound track from The Gone Jackals. Btw, Bone to Pick is the record which has the game songs. The only other game of this genre I had played so far was Fate of Atlantis, the Floppy Disk version, which was all text based. Full Throttle is probably one of the first games to deliver the so called "cinematic experience" in PC gaming. It has good and elaborated story, with great characters and very good voice acting. Listening to Mark Hamill playing Ripburger is just great! It's unfortunate that Roy Conrad passed away back in 2002, and I do recall reading somewhere this was the reason why a second game was never done. May he rest in peace! The set is somewhat futuristic, with hovering cars, mixing bikers and heavy metal in a desert landscape. It's put together so well that you will have no trouble getting yourself immersed in its world. In terms of playing time, game is short, if you know what to do. One of my friends had the game, back in the day, and I've told him I could finish it in 45 minutes. He didn't believe, so I got it done at his PC on a Sunday afternoon. Off course I got to skip dialogs, etc. Still, I do recommend exploring all areas, talking to everyone all dialog lines, as the game has many good dialogs. Please note most old games were short if you had a walkthrough telling what to do, however the value in those games was playing and trying to solve the puzzles and exploring. There are good puzzles, and also brutal puzzles, which could keep you stuck for a long time. About the puzzles, there are two moments in which you could have trouble. The mining road battles can be hard, as it works like a puzzle. You got to figure out which weapons should be used against who, unless you use the "shift + v" cheat for auto win. It still works. The other one is a car battle at a destruction derby. for this one, it's better look for a walkthrough in the internet, as I still forget how to get this one done, after all these years. This remastered version is quite nice. Graphics can be shifted "on the fly" between old style letter box and remastered widescreen while playing the game. The remastered graphics stay true to the original. There is also a bonus section with concept art, sound track and even an option for audio commentary for the game. Double Fine did a great job with this game, as well as Day of the Tentacle. Different from other point and click adventure games, FT has a cleaner screen and actions can be accessed by left clicking the mouse for action menu and right click mouse for inventory. It enhances the gaming experience when compared to the titles which came berore this one. Together with Fate of Atlantis, The Dig and Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle makes a great combo for one who likes point and click adventure games. Note: I never got to play Monkey Island though. People say it's good. I suppose these old games bring lots of memory to people like me, and they are good ones, worth playing these days. It would be great if we could get a Fate of Atlantis remastered, wouldn't it?

Fight'N Rage

It deserves an arcade cabinet

I've underestimated this game due to the store page screenshots. Fight'n Rage is the best beat 'em up I've played in many years. Considering this game was done by one person, yes one person, it's understandable that the aesthetic of the characters show some kind of variation, giving the impression they were designed separately. Putting this point to the side, the overall game design is really cool, and the screenshots don't do justice to the real product. There is an in game options to adjust CRT/scanlines screen effect, providing good variation to fit different player preferences. The soundtrack is done with electric/acoustic guitar and is also great, fitting well the game aesthetic and story. Talking about the game story, it's hard to see a game of this genre with a more elaborated story. This one is an exception. There are some loose ends in the overall plot, however the game play can lead you thru different paths to reach the final boss, and every path adds more to the plot. The game has several different endings. Fight mechanics are really solid, with complex combos, and extremely well balanced for players looking for a good challenge. Don't let people fool you by calling this game spam and rage. Spamming controller buttons will only get you so far. If you got a game pad with a good d-pad, you can take the most out of this game. There are several things you can unlock in the game, like playing tips, songs, extra costumes for each of the three characters, different play modes, etc. You can even unlock AI companions, so you can control one character and let the AI control others to play thru the game. Reality is that this game deserves an arcade cabinet. The first time I've played Fight'n Rage, it felt like I went back in time. It felt just like playing Double Dragon at the arcade back in the day.

Tomb Raider GOTY

A not so good cinematic experience

Based on the majority of the reviews, you might think this game is a masterpiece. I’m sorry, but I will have to disagree. If you look through the story point of view, yes it’s a great game. Graphics are good, even for today standards, voice over is great and we got an engaging origin story for a beloved character, but here is where it all stops. This game didn't age well, by any means. The excessive camera shaking will give most people motion sickness, and the excess of quick time events not only breaks the immersion, but also gets extremely annoying as the game progresses. I don’t know who took the decision to add these features to the game, but while I was playing all I could think of was this person should be banned from the game industry for life time. On the top of these issues, there is also a glitch in the Tomb of the Last Adventurer DLC, which might force you to load a previous game save if you don't know about it. Sad, but it looks to be the way Square Enix works, as there are other games released by them which were never pached to fix its issues. In the end of the day, is Tomb Raider a 9 out of 10 game? Surely not, most likely 6 or 7. This is an ok game. It's unfortunate how blind today's players are when making their reviews, as this will not help anyone. People like this are doing a disservice to the gaming industry, and to other players. If you like Lara Croft, I would recommend you getting Rise of the Tomb Raider instead of this one, as it’s a better cinematic-gaming experience. Even on discount sale, this game is not worth the time.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration

A good cinematic experience

Tomb Raider games used to be about action, adventure, exploring Tombs and finding secrets. Lara had strong self-confidence on her abilities. Now they are about cinematic experience, crafting, stealth and survival mechanics. And Lara still looks like an insecure kid, afraid of the world. Don't let the nice graphics fool you. The game has nice locations, good sounding, but it constantly takes the control from you in such a way that game play becomes sections between cutscenes. This is more like an interactive movie, in which the protagonist is not even that interesting. It's a very linear game, like the previous one, with very little replayability as you can get 100% completion easily in the first run. At least the camera shake isn't as bad as the first game.
