Fallout

Real RPG done right on PC

"For Gabriel, thank you for all those years playing RPG. It was fun!" Reviewing a classic is never easy, even for experienced players. It's Fallout review time and after putting over 100 hours on Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, I believe I can give a good opinion about the original one. Although my Steam profile says I’ve played less than an hour of gameplay in this game, don’t be fooled by it. I had the original one in CD and played it thru the end at least 3 times, completing over 90% of the game. The good: - Very good environmental and sound designs give you a strong immersion in the post-apocalyptic wasteland scenario - Wasteland areas are very well set up, matching very well the main plot, and bringing to you that feeling of not knowing what you will find while exploring them - The game has an excellent story which unfolds very well, as records and logs you find thru the game will give you details of past events thru other people’s eyes - Different from Wasteland 2, you will hardly be facing choices of having to help one or another, although timing to visit the locations can alter gaming experience and quests / events results - Very well designed NPC’s to interact with in every town - Total freedom to take the path you want and deal with the consequences - Open world, allowing you to travel from place to place in the order you want - A good amount of Easter eggs with reference from pop culture of the 80’s and 90’s - Lots of replay ability - Graphic violence level can be tuned down in the menu, but I got to tell I’ve always played in maximum as I do believe is more appropriate to the game - Excellent character creation and progress system which, believe it or not, is based on Gurps RPG system - Fantastic weapons to choose, from melee to firearms, explosives and even energy weapons - It’s turn based combat, which is excellent for the game type - There is a high resolution patch which can put the game in 16:9 aspect ratio, without distortion, which I totally recommend - Not a too long game as Fallout 2, but not a short one by any means The bad: - Not as much voice over of dialogs as today’s games, but the main NPC's have very good ones - It’s an old game, so you won’t have character appearance customization, although his / her in game appearance changes depending in the armor type you wear - Although the NPC followers do help a lot (specially for carrying stuff), they are nothing to write home about - The old graphics and isometric view might not appeal to all audiences - When using the high resolution patch, you will need to choose between having bigger elements in the screen (characters, buildings, etc) with a little of pixelization, or very small elements The ugly: - You will need to look for walkthroughs or guides in the internet if you want to take most of the game and complete as much quests as possible, as there are some side quests you don’t even know they exist - This version of the game looks to be from Europe, in which some sensorship was applied at some areas, so you might consider having a look at the No Mutants Allowed website and check the FIXT mod in the download section, or getting Fallout Et Tu which is even better, but takes more work to properly setup Some people choose games based in its playing mechanics, other people based in the story, and there are also people who buy games only because they have good graphics, but in the end of the day having fun is what counts. This game is without shadow of a doubt better than Fallout 2, Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas, if you do like the game mechanics and don’t bother the dated game engine. The story is excellent and game mechanics are really solid. Fallout is a must have for any player looking for a good RPG!

Star Trek™: 25th Anniversary

Star Trek TOS 4th Season

"For my wife, thank you for 34 years of patience and understanding." Time to make my first review of a Star Trek game, and the chosen one had to be ST 25th Anniversary. I do recall seeing this game box in the shelf of a PC game shop back in the day when it was launched, it said, “requires CD-ROM”. Ouch! I barely had money to buy my Sound Blaster 16 Value, how could I afford a CD-ROM drive to play this game? So, I had to let it pass… Luckily these old games came back at GOG and now Steam, and I could finally put my hands on it, but is it worth it? Let’s find out! The good: - Let me start by saying that the characters are voiced by the actors from the original TV show, and only this already makes the game 8 out of 10, but there is more… - This version of the game has all dialogs voice over - Game is presented in chapters, so it feels like you are interacting with the adventures of the original series crew in a 4th season which was never produced to the TV, but now came up in a game format - The game chapters have excellent plots, with good references to the TV show, even bringing back some side characters from the show (I won’t spoil who) - Environmental designs for planet surface areas and inside ships are very well done and in line with the original ST TV show aesthetic - Sound design is very good and follows exactly the style of the original ST series - There are lots of dialogs to be explored between the Enterprise crew members, and along the chapters when interacting with other characters - Bones and Spock still can’t get to an agreement at sometimes :D - The Enterprise computer has an interesting library which allows you to type a subject, and the computer will give you some details about it - The player has some freedom to solve the situations diplomatically, or letting your phaser speak for you, but off course you will be rated by Star Fleet on how well you handle your assignments - You get to play with Kirk, Spock and McCoy, to make the best use of their abilities to solve the puzzles or challenges presented in the missions - Puzzles are very well done, and hard to solve like any other game from this era - Good gameplay time (about 7 hours), with good replay ability as one can try to solve the missions thru other means or improve the Star Fleet rating of the missions up to 100% - The point and click adventure and inventory systems work well, not falling behind when compared to the Lucas Art’s point and click adventure classics such as Day of the Tentacle The bad: - The ship combat system is not that good, but it's not difficult to get the hang on how to control the Enterprise and make the best use of its weapons and Scott’s help - Some puzzles can be quite hard, so players which are not used to these old games might have to look for a walkthrough in the internet when getting stuck at some point - You need the star map, which is in the game manual, to know to which star system you got to jump for your next assignment, so get the manual from the game Steam page otherwise you will jump to the wrong system and get attacked - Like most games of this era, there is no volume control for sound fx and music, it's either on of off, so the Enterprise bridge sounds can get anoying at times - The old graphics might not appeal to everyone, although it runs under DOSBox and you can edit its configuration file inside the game folder to make the game less pixelized The ugly: - It feels like ages since we had a decent Star Trek game, what the heck happened? - Where is Star Trek TNG A Final Unit? We need this game too!!! Final verdict: If you are a fan of the original Star Trek TV show and like point and click adventure games, this one is a must to have at your library! This is not only a great game, but it also captures the spirit of the original TV show in such a way which you will only be able to see again in its sequel “Star Trek Judgment Rites”.

FTL: Advanced Edition

It's all about the journey

A very good starship managing game, which is all about the trip instead the destination. The good: - Excellent ship management mechanics - Each run will feel different due to the rogue like style - Has some very good mods available in the internet, which can boost the experience and even some graphics such as shields, UI, background and planets - You can rename your crew, so when you get attached to them, they just die - Good range of ship upgrades and alien species to recruit as crew members - Alien crew members have different specific skills, which add a lot to the game - Game play runs in real time, but you can pause to give orders to crew and do ship system management - Very good replay ability The bad: - Might not appeal to all audiences due to the both retro graphics and sound track style - Since it's a rogue like, each successful run unlocks new ships, however when starting new runs you will start from scratch in terms of crew members and ship upgrades The ugly: - Once you engage the final enemy and beat it, you might find it repetitive in the next runs, which can be changed thru mods I do recommend for people who likes the specific game style, casual players and people looking for the starship management experience, which might be the best one so far. Try the game first without mods, and then if you want some spice just search the internet and have it modded.

Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™

A game ahead of its time

"In loving memory of my mother, who could never really understand how my mind works." This game was ahead of its time, which resulted in a strong player community effort to recover it and make playable. I have played back when it was launched and recently after the latest player patch which fixed the game. I've also played a lot of Vampire The Masquerade 2nd Ed pen and paper RPG back in the day, so let's get to the review, shall we? The good: - Graphics were really good at the time, and athough look dated, don't interfer with game experience - Excellent plot, with lots twists and side quests - Gore, violence and strong language, ahhh the old days... - Probably the most scaring scenario I've played in a game until today (won't spoil which one, you will see) - Very good immersion in the Vampire RPG Los Angeles' societ - Immersive environmental, and a sound track which really makes you feel inside the game - NPC's voice over is very good, which was not common for games at that time - Very good NPC's to interact with, had lots of fun with Larry and VV - Freedom to play Mr Nice Guy, or be a Douchbag, it's all up to you - Freedom to solve your ploblems by talking or using brute force, it's all up to you - Character customization and progression based in the Vampire pen and paper RPG, which makes a huge difference in game play progression - Graphic and character appeaance mods are available, but not simple to apply - 1080p resolution can be achieved thru mods - Console mode for cheats, if you feel really necessary The bad: - Not exactely the pen and paper Vampire The Masquerade RPG game system, unless you apply mods / patches - Some dialog lines might not be available when interacting to NPC's if you don't have the necessary skill, as it's part of the RPG mechanic - Combat system is nothing to write home about, specially if you are used with modern 3rd person shooters - Final boss reminds me of console boss battles, which in my opinion doesn't fit well for an RPG game genre, but at least doesn't interfer with the plot and you can use console cheat to beat it if you want - Don't expect romance with NPC's, like current RPG games, as this was not something we had back in the day when the game was launched - Developers never made another game like this, however lots of people are still waiting :( The ugly: - Game bugs were not fixed by developers, so needs player undestanding on how to apply a mod / player base patch in order to fix the game and make it playable Is it still worth playing? Offcouse, specially if you are a fan of Vampire the Masquerade pen and paper RPG, but be aware that a player mod / patch is needed in order to fix the game and make it playable. It's not just installing and getting it to roll right away. Look for the latest unofficial patch at Bloodlines Nexus or Bloodlines Moddb, it's totally worth it as it restores lots of content, in addition to providing all the necessary bug fixes! I do recommend waiting for sale to buy, as it can get really cheap. Note: This game is highly addictive. I do recall playing from Friday night to Sunday noon straight, eating in front of the computer, to finish the game in my first run back in 2004! You've been warned!!!

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw

A good WC Privateer Remake

It took me a while to get along with the game. Understanding and mapping controls can be a pain, but after I got this done it was like back in the day, when playing Wing Commander Privateer. The story is not mind blowing, however it does the job to keep you moving forward. Also, if you want to ignore the main story and just play it as a sand box, it works quite well. Overall design aesthetics is nice, and the Dodge Sector feels quite alive with all the NPC ships flying around and random events. In terms of game mechanics, there are a few things which annoyed me during the first play through, but I started modding the game and solve most of the issues, at least for myself xD You can check my full mods collection at Nexus mods under JPMoriarty user. There are new ships, new HUD's, new modules, weapons rebalance (providing better alternatives to deal with mobs and capital ships), speed and turn overhaul for all ships in game (for better flight stick gaming experience), alternative warp sound, additional jump gates (to reduce travel time in late game) and more. Unfortunately, the game has a few bugs in main story line missions, which can’t be solved through modding, some times causing missions to lock and preventing completion, forcing you to start over the active mission in the main story line. Reason for losing an additional star. Anyways, although some people compare this game to Freelancer in their reviews, this is not accurate, as this game is heavily based on Privateer, and carry some of its flaws. Keep this in mind. Tip for new players: Like in WC Privateer, afterburner is the first ship module you've got to buy, in order to be able to escape from AI ambush.

STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition

An elegant game for a more civilized age

It's nice that GOG included three game versions in one. So far, I've installed and played the 98 version, which runs pretty well on Windows 10. Game is still great fun. Energy, weapons, and shield management are a must to succed in the missions. No gimbal or aim assistance, as ships are not bullet sponges, so either you fly or die. If you don't have a good situational awareness, you can bump into a Freighter or Corvette while turning fast and your ship is done. Flying near Imperial destroyers, dodging their turbo lasers, is a kind of thing I've missed for a long time. No current space game can deliver this kind of experience. Having a joystick is a must, and trust me, you don't want to experience this game with a mouse or keyboard. There is no jousting combat in this game, if you know what I mean. Only dogfights : )
