Once more... what truly pisses me off is that in this world some people cannot buy food to survive, some other can just crap out 44 billions like nothing happened.

I guess it's a matter of priorities. Or of sociopaths having become the ruling class.

Cool, I think I might start a hate speech account against fat people and nerds/geeks on Twitter now.

More "freeze peach" -> more chaos -> more crime -> more business for me.

But you got to love the dedication of a man who is willing to increase the chaos that will result in a worst living conditions for all of us so that he can stick it to a "libtard" that exists only in his own head.

You missunderstood me. I was not describing some my crazy plan when I take over the world. I was describing the period before social networks started to curb all the hate speech. When Trump riled up people using his Twitter account and Alex Jones was screaming from YT homepage.
Turning twitter into 4chan will bring you back closer to those fun times.
Just as you obviously loved that period because of all the hate you could spew out, I loved it because of all the business contracts. But I hated it because of all the hate that was seeping into real life.

While I don't think Musk is a sociopath, there is a sweet spot between chaos and a rigidly controlled economy with no individual freedom and I agree that we've gone too far on the side of chaos.

It is disconcerting to see how little taxes corporations pay and there is only so much a tax paying middle-class can finance.

Honestly, if things keep progressing the way they are and politicians don't put their pants on and do their job (ie, representing people's interest), I don't know how at least 50% of the population is gonna make it.

I think it's insane that I'm comfortably in the top 10% in terms of income (for my country) and I have to worry about the affordability of a middle-class home. If I was making 1/2 or even 2/3 of my salary (which a lot of people are making), I'd be living in a constant state of panic about encroaching poverty. I don't know what's the point of employment if you still can't pay your basics. You'll have money in your pocket when you get evicted from your home and you'll be able to afford your evening meal at McDonald's before you go to bed on the sidewalk at your street corner. You certainly won't care much about sending people to Mars or who owns Twitter.

areki38: Elon Musk bought Twitter. Not you. Stop projecting, not everyone is a totalitarian maniac, even if your system can't stomach that.

ettac cigam si eman ym: Not everyone is, but Musk certainly is. For all its flaws, Twitter was a public company. Musk buying it and taking it private is not democratisation by any stretch of the imagination.
Normally that would be the case but twitter was allowed to act as a state PR, censor and whatever else was calling the shots* in opposition to its stated business while breaking the rules where it pleased and being let off by the authorities.

P.S I remember the British state asking for more censorship from those companies. What do Americans think of a foreign state attacking their constitutional rights?

I fixed your quote to bring it more in line with reality.

You missunderstood me. I was not describing some my crazy plan when I take over the world. I was describing the period before social networks started to curb all the diverse debate. When Trump pointed out the situation using his Twitter account and Alex Jones was predicting current events from YT homepage.
Turning twitter into a place where people can express different opinions will bring you back closer to those fun times.
Just as you obviously loved that period because of all the facts you could spew out, I loved it because of all the business contracts. But I hated it because of all the retarded arguments that were being put down and the public could have their freedom of expression which is a basic right in a democracy.

Yayyy more COVID and climate change misinformation. Yay.

I mean, yay more freedom of speech. Yay.

As if anyone ever had absolute freedom of speech. What a ridiculous notion.

Still, open-sourcing the algos is probably a good thing.

Could have bought StickDeath or SteakandCheese for 50$ and both had a better userbase than twitter :)

Yep. You'll have to put on your big boy pants and deal with it. Or, you could debate. Bring better information to the discussion. That's what free and open democracies have done for centuries. You know the kind of countries that deal with 'misinformation' through deplatforming and censorship? Russia. China. Saudi Arabia. If that's your jam, move there.

Nah. You just want an excuse to shut down and censor people you disagree with. Politicians want to use it to slander their opposition and suppress stories inconvenient to them. Corporate media wants to use it to discredit their competition in the streaming space, because they're losing their audience and precious revenue. And governments use it to fear monger and divide people. That's how this disinformation project has played out in reality.

This is disappointing but expected. I can't say I have much faith in the existing Twitter leadership so I don't think it will change that much, but I have no hope that Musk will make things any better.

Twitter was an interesting experiment in many respects, and put to test - and to rest - the concept of the "marketplace of ideas". The notion that the best ideas and truth will prevail if given a level playing field has proven to be naive, and the reality is quite the opposite. In practice, the truth is buried under a mountain of lies and the loudest and most obnoxious voices effectively have a heckler's veto. Unrestricted free speech is toxic and counterproductive to actual public discourse, effectively creating informal censorship that is very heavy-handed.

This is in many ways the question of our time. How do we promote truth and civility in public discourse? How do we create a "public square" that is open to everyone but isn't immediately taken over by a gang of hooligans? How do we aid the dissemination of truthful information without letting lies overwhelm them? I don't have an answer to that, and I don't think anyone does. It will require experimentation and iteration to get as close as we can to that ideal free and open public square. Musk has pretty much stated that such experimentation won't be happening at Twitter under his watch, but it's not like I expected anything from Twitter on this frontier to begin with.

Why should I 'debate' blatant misinformation that is harmful to society? Is it my responsibility to not let the gullible masses swallow it all up and destroy our world? I don't think so. I have better things to do, like play video games.

I'll rely on the experts to show that an anti-parasitic deworming medication has no effect on COVID before ingesting it thank you very much. Seems like that process of critical thinking, that crucial step of ingesting valid information online, is skipped all too often. I've often wondered what would occur if they acknowledged this limitation of educating critical thinking in our societies. I guess we would all be more left leaning.
That's what free and open democracies have done for centuries. You know the kind of countries that deals with 'misinformation' through deplafomring and censorship? Russi. China. Saudi Arabia. If that's your jam, move there.
You can thus add the EU to the list (you know, apparently the most developed place in the world) as they censor "free speech" too. The thing is, you'll never get why. That's the shame of it. Prove me wrong and I'll be pleasantly surprised :)

Debating bad ideas and misinformation is how societies progress. Limiting debate and discussion is how they regress. And what's 'harmful to society' is not only subjective, but contingent on the country where you live. Some Muslim countries think it's harmful to allow woman to vote, or for them to show their faces in public. Some, like most in the EU, don't value free speech as much as Americans do. But then some countries in the EU still have blasphemy laws, a relic of the middle ages. Most developed place indeed.

You seem to be under the notion that online debate determines facts and/or societal progress. Or indeed that social media 'debates' actually convince people of anything other than their own biases.

You probably also think that's air you're breathing?

Yeah, called it, you'll never get it. Not pleasantly surprised, unfortunately :(
