Marauder (Steam)
Also called Man of Prey in Europe, I think Marauder is its name for America. This is some of the best Slavjank I've played...even better than Pathologic maybe. Another game I learnt about in the CRPG book. I was drawn to it because of it's earlier sister game- 7.62 High Calibre and its comparisons to my all time favorite game Jagged Alliance 2.
Whilst 7.62 is pretty much a literal JA2, but Russian and with RTWP combat, I started with Marauder because it has much the same combat system but in gritty linear survival campaign with canned levels. I thought it would be a better way to learn a system that is noted for having a high learning curve.
Well, I think it worked. After a very slow start I really got into it and it now joins some of my favorites. This is the best tactical combat sim out there. It breaks weapons down to such detail as the fraction of a second it takes to ready them to the shoulder or fire from the hip. There are no simplifications like broad over watch mechanics...in this game if you can ready your weapon the fastest..you'll probably shoot the other guy before he shoots you.
But..yes, this absolutely is also Slavjank (that's a genre by the way). The game is janky and rough...it only goes up to 1080p- and even that requires a patch or edit of the ini file. The English translation is of the "so bad it's funny" category. It's supposed to be crash prone...but I only had crashes in the final mission for some reason. It has very little story, yet I like it...NATO are the bad guys for a change! None of it matters because the game is great and feels like it's made by a small group of programmers making the type of game they love. And tactical squad games are also the games that I love the most.
Can't wait to get to 7.62 High Calibre. Incidentally, I wonder why this game isn't on GOG when the developers other two games are?
