Maybe it's not news to anyone to but me, though, since I don't play so many games any more.

Got the new Deus Ex. Apparently I preordered it so it came with some extra preorder bonus DLC stuff. But when I was playing, I noticed that the inventory tutorial noted one thing - the DLC items you get are kept in a "storage" tab and limited in quantity(ammo usually a large number, special weapons and such usually a small number like 1). Once applied to a savegame and used, they can't be returned. So if you want to use that shiny special gun or wear your dapper special edition hat (OK, that may have been TF2) in a new game, it seems you have to buy the DLC again.

I guess the metrics show that most players play a game once (and anecdotally, not even all of once) and so most people won't be bothered, but I feel like this is some sort of long-tail economists' dream come true.

Wow... One time use DLC..? That's absolutely ridiculous. I want this one badly, but denuvo is a no go. After my experiences on DOOM, I'm done with denuvo.
This only ices the cake for me.

What happened on DOOM? I recently completed well over 100 hours on Dragon Age: Inquisition and had no issues.

The thought that the DLC is one-time use is certainly icing; made of dogshit. I'll be avoiding any game ever released with this kind of DLC mechanism.

Myself and a few other people have experienced 24 hour Denuvo lockouts from Doom for simply doing things like changing the clock speed on my processor or Graphics processor, or for switching to Vulkan, or other mundane tasks. It's a garbage system. I had no trouble with Lords of the Fallen or Dragon Age Inquisition, nor on Hitman. But on DOOM, it shut me out for a day on 3 separate occasions.
If this is the direction gaming is going I'm glad I have a large enough backlog that I don't need to ever buy another game.

Lovely. And they wonder why people start to think about pirating games...

Huh. I had to pull out half my RAM last week and was going to replace it this coming weekend. Guess I'll see if that locks me out of the game :P

Well, I started a new game of Witcher3 when the 1.24 patch hit, since I didn't like my choices in the first DLC and didn't play more than about two hours of the second before I screwed up that one too :P Worst case, I can shelve Deus Ex and come back to it this winter ^_^
Gave it a few more hours but ultimately a bit of a disappointment. For the normal GOG diehard, you'll be unhappy to know it has DRM, single-use DLC, and in-game microtransactions. None of that would be enough to really bother me, but there's just not a really great game behind the walls, so it's hard to justify scaling them. The writing is worse than in Human Revolution, the map design is very uninspired, and in the first 3-4 hours the game just doesn't make any real effort to give you a reason to care about any of the people in it. The hardware requirements are steep but manageable, so that's not really the problem.

Don't feel bad about skipping it for now. It'll probably be worth picking up in a year or so, on sale.
Single use DLC oh come on that now makes dlc as rental items. Was in two minds in buying this but the initial dlc tier system they had in place at the beginning put me right off buying it then and i am glad i didnt pre order at all. Will not buy this now if this is the way DLC is going to be.
Bleh.

thanks for the info! While i kinda hate "game altering" preorder/"reward" dlcs so i didn't use apply mine yet (only 6 hours in to the game yet though and may apply them when i feel it fitting storywise) this is still quite outrageous given the fact for people actually using/wanting to use/utilize that kind of DLC.
I played Human Revolution twice so ya there i would have gotten "screwed" then being an user wanting to use that DLC items.
This is some hannukah tier jewery. I thought the dark days of limited installations and horse armour dlc were supposed to be over.

Why am I not surprised.

Shouldn't those be called Loot Crates? Or maybe Fatality Tokens :P

One time use... we now know why they are going to push the DRM, because they want you to re-purchase the DLC...

And yet hundred thousands of people will buy and probably praise it.

As long as gamers don't start to vote with their wallets, the industry won't change and the madness will continue.
