Breja: The only scummy thing are the pre-orders. It is the exploitation of your FOMO that is the scummy thing, and yet you are acting like the exact opposite is true. It's all completely upside down.

If I had a wish regarding GOG and pre-orders, it would be that they be outright banned in this store. It's a scammy, predatory practice. It's crazy to see people outright angrily demanding to be exploited.
Pre-order bonuses are indeed scummy, but taking choice away from users (on whether to acquire them or not) is even more scummy.

Banning FOMO from GOG would simply ensure that every game on GOG would be incomplete, even by devs/pubs that were willing to offer it to GOG. Instead, you should be campaigning to ban FOMO industry-wide, a regulatory ban, like the loot box ban, so that they would stop developing FOMO in the first place.

My main concern is always the acquisition of a FULL GAME. People on Steam can boycott pre-orders if they wish. On GOG, most publishers boycott themselves on our behalf already.

And speaking of FOMO, In-game FOMO redemption menu says "Redeem Code feature is currently not available. Check your network connection."
Is that intentional or not?

People are also reporting save issues.

I'm sorry, I just can't take "we have been denied the opportunity to fall victim to a scam" seriously. I guess we are also denied the choice of buying DRM-ed games on GOG, might as well be upset about that.

SargonAelther: I DO disagree, because that is only a small part. If I install vanilla World of Warcraft from a CD and its logon screen launches, shows the dark portal animation, plays music, plays the cinematic, is that game preserved? No it is not, because we cannot play the damn game. If they get a hold of Diablo 2 without LOD (So 4 acts), is that game preserved? No, not without LOD.

Launching (a part of) the game on modern hardware is not enough. Content availability matters too, if not more so. The Video Game History Foundation preserves everything game-related even magazines. That is preservation. Any publisher can patch up a game and they all do it. That is not preservation. Todd Howard is preserving Skyrim harder than anybody else LOL.

Going back to GOG, they used to advertise about giving us manual and soundtrack and various goodies. Now they fail to give us that. Now Steam gets all that and GOG gets scraps. We can't get the extras. We can't get the full game. The cake is now indeed a lie.

GOG is the victim of its own success. They proved that people wanted extras. They proved that people wanted older games. So now everyone monetises extras (on Steam) and everyone patches up old games (on Steam) and GOG gets scraps. And full-price still-warm scraps are the most infuriating.

Where are the COE33 soundtracks? Where are the Din Crisis soundtracks? On Steam, not GOG.
Where are the classic C&C titles? On Steam, not GOG.
Where is all the modern game FOMO? On Steam, not GOG.

What exactly is being preserved at this point? GOG must try harder. Less unwanted patching (Dragon Age, Oblivion) and more minimum guarantees for missing content.
First: Just stop it with lecturing people here what the correct meaning of preservation includes (for native speakers) and then accusing GOG of breaking their promises. So I'll ignore your lamentations about how the games are not anymore what they use to be.

If you want to keep old versions and content available, that has been retracted or replaced by the devs, keep the backups of the installation files and don't demand them from GOG. That is the archive function I mentioned and it isn't GOG's duty to provide it. And don't come up with new players, that want to buy the games now.

Regarding those soundtracks: tough luck. I have hundreds of movie soundtracks on CD, and I take them with most games, when available, but I'm here for the DRM-free games, and modern games at that, only 22% of my games are older than 2010. That GOG advertised 12 years ago that they would give the soundtracks and other goodies doesn't necessarily convince devs and publishers today to release them on GOG: So don't accuse GOG that the are breaking their promises.
All nice to haves, but if they are not available this should not hinder GOG to first and foremost bring the game here.

You could just as well argue that banning DRM on GOG prevents GOG from getting many games from publishers who would otherwise be willing to sell them here, so GOG should allow DRM and we should focus on "a regulatory ban" instead.

If you agree pre-orders exploiting FOMO are a bad thing, you should encourage people to ignore it. Encourage the perception of these bonuses as what they are - inessential, unimportant and worthless. The only way to actually get rid of it is for people to stop making it profitable. Instead, by making such a fuss about them, you are building them up, encouraging people to care, and supporting the whole scam.

Raketenfahrer: GOG has always understood preservation as keeping games running on modern OS, NOT making a complete archive of every FOMO idiocy or game version available.

Take your own advice, what can I say, original lecturer.

It also isn't GOG's duty to break things with their unwanted patches, especially when there are broken games that could use them far more.

I do keep everything archived, but you are also forgetting about new buyers who buy games post-bad-update. What are they supposed to do? If GOG can provide downgrades via the """optional""" Galaxy client, they should be able to provide them via offline installers too.

On Steam... ON STEAM AND CONSOLES. You can run boycott campaigns on Steam and consoles. GOG is so insignificant that publishers are boycotting themselves on our behalf. A handful of users refusing to pre-order is not gonna make a difference and I will not hurt my game content, from a rare GOG-friendly publisher, for some lost cause.

Others are welcome to shoot themselves in the content on Steam and consoles all they wish.

^ this. the victim is not only playing the victim, framing it as being a noble cause and asking to be assaulted and says thank for hitting me. its really a crazy world, the mental contorsionism act that some users make to something crazy sound reasonable is wild.

I have been following the entire time GOG's definition of preservation, that is accepted by most users here. You are entitled to use another definition, which is probably, or even most likely "more" correct for native speakers, but then don't accuse GOG that they aren't following through with their promises. If you just said, that you'd like them to follow your "correct" definition, all could be fine and dandy.

Same goes with DRM, everyone has their own definition and gets upset when GOG does something they dont approve.
As long GOG is somewhat consistent on how they act, to me is perfectly acceptable marketing or otherwise - even if if have a different definition of DRM or preservation.

Its GOG that owns/manage the business, we relay feedback, they choose to accept/ignore and we move one. Throwing constant acusations, bashing, spamming and moaning until they cave is where i think is unacceptable hence sometimes gettin tired of the entitled customers that take every moment - even positive moments like a rare birthday - to bash on GOG and the industry. No self-control or sense of self-awarwness they are the reason why people dont engage or support things that are worth supporting - what casual sane persona wants to be linked or associated with such behaviours (i.e. its not a passion for a hobby, but an obsession for it that some users have that take things too far).

I am. Am not just using that as excuse for obssesive compulsions and behaviours that are ruining communities with tantrums. I had mentioned to you this on the Discord once: you have a great body of knowledge, but the fact that you are fixated and abrasive, and dont know where to the draw the line and stop the imaginery battles that you think are noble = you are damaging the community, you even called me a "an enemy" once for disagreeing with you!

Most recent example: you kinda impersonate GOG by posting news for every release because you cant accept that GOG that doesnt post news or threads for every game. You simply cant take "no" for answer.

The only reason why GOG tolerates this behaviour is because as a business you are atm, good business, like taking a candy from a kid: you literally buy pretty much anything and everything GOG has on store = they have no incentive to say you are taking things too far (IMO, they should, but GOG seems fine so...meh am not the one that has to put with you so am ok w that). This behaviour of """"collecting"""" throwing money at everything gaming is why there are DLCs, pre-order, and many other shitty practices: the things you complain the most, your consumer profile is the main reason why they exist to begin with!

Some of the community wont say this, but i have no problem in saying because some of your spamming and stalking pub/devs yields results and it benefits them (as they dont have to anything): offline you are not taken as serious person. What you do is not collecting or gaming, its an obessive behaviour that atm GOG stands to benefit from, and some users too = thats the only reason why your wild takes are tolerated (not because they make sense/valid points)

You could have use you extensive knowledge and obsession for gaming in a positive way, but yet in Discord or in the forums am pretty sure a analytics of your content posted would be just negative, abrasive and belittling content and very few positive things. Dude, you are known for "annoying people until they cave or ignore you". Take a hint.

Am sorry for the harsh post, but at least once in your life, think its about someone tell it how it is, and not walk around the bush and avoid the issue. Hope that you can takeway something useful and use your knowldege of gaming towards something positive instead.

P.S. Hoarding its not collecting.

Great, it's nice they are not trying to exploit us. If anything it's the Steam users who should be pissed :D

For what, the third time - we could make the same argument for bringing Hitman back here. A "GOG friendly" publisher was willing to sell the game here, and we rejected it for some lost cause! Oh, woe is us and our "content".

Neither are you. Those virtual bonuses are no more "collectibles" than saved JPGs of paintings are an art collection.

I seriously do not want for this sound insulting or hurtful, but since this is not the first similar conversation with you, I honestly think your issues with FOMO are quite unhealthy. You seem to be both aware of how predatory it all is, and at the same time desperate to paticipate in it. Sounds like some addiction-like issues.

There is a big difference between missing extras from the gog version (that's not a problem, we can just pay less) and drm on cosmetics like with cyberpunk 2077.
The first one is ok... A gog version that's missing some content will just be there for the people that want it at the price that people are willing to pay (or people will just wait for a discount).
The second one is not ok, drm should not be on gog, cosmetics should not be locked under gog galaxy.

No, some people are just not obsessed, chances are they wouldn't pay those skins/items any special attention while playing the game normally, it's less than 0,01% of the total content of a game and only exist to exploit FOMO
I don't care about CONTROL, it's not my type of game, but missing content is not ok!

Skins and cosmetics are an essential part of gaming experience.

So hopefully Remedy Entertainment will remedy the situation and provide the pre-order content as a standalone DLC.
