koima57: Oh, I remember you, "timppu, La revolución!"
And I remember you, whining about people who think highly of GOG pushing DRM-free releases, and even applaud GOG for it. How do they dare?

It is ironic that you keep denouncing people who applaud GOG for pushing DRM-free releases, while not similarly denouncing people like you who applaud GOG for pushing old games releases (more so back when they only offered classic games). Why is it such a crime to applaud GOG for the DRM-free aspect, but not for applauding them for classic releases?

That doesn't make sense, and I have asked you already before, why is it such a problem to you that some others have a different preferences from yours. You complaining about DRM-free (and GOG using it as an angle to sell games) on GOG forum is like someone else going to Steampowered forums to complain about the existence of Steamworks and about people who happen to like Steamworks.

koima57: You can even find my original definition of what I consider "DRM Free" fanatism, freed from your own, foreign interpretation, assumptions.

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_downrepping_epidemic/post61
And elsewhere you denounced people for showing their appreciation for GOG.com to release games DRM-free, or for complaining about bundles (I presume you refer to e.g. Humble Bundles?) increasingly offering also DRM-games in the form of Steam keys.

Not only that, you also accused the "DRM-free fanatics" of not complaining to CDPR about selling The Witcher games also on Steam, and that somehow proving that GOG.com is a hypocrite for using DRM-free games as a selling point. Now there's a nice strawman...

I see strong parallels with the people (that you consider as "DRM-free fanatics") who complain about Humble Bundle moving away from their earlier principles like "Linux version for all games" and "DRM-free games", and you being bitter over GOG shifting (or broadening) focus from selling only old games.

To both of you people/groups, my advice is: vote with your wallet, and stop the useless whining. Humble Bundle made the decision to shift focus from mere DRM-free and multiplatform games, and GOG.com made the decision to broaden from mere "Good Old Games" and concentrate more on the DRM-free as a selling point.

koima57: What I actually wrote :

"You just state the obvious, re-inforcing my point.. Stores like IndieGameStand, FireFlower, DotEmu, Desura, Shiny Loot, the Humble Bundle Store have a strong focus on "DRM-Free" too, and / or what they correctly label as "DRM-Lite", fitting for people like me who simply do not enjoy paying twice or more for the same product, adding value to their offer in providing additional activation keys, along with an executable "DRM-Free" installer.

I will hardly praise the stubornness / strong will (...) of GOG in not doing the same, "DRM-Free fanatics" only does, with their eyeballs popping out of their skulls in blind worship. "

Understand, individuals vocally and fiercely praising GOG to not provide an extra Steam activation key for a same product, unlike the most of stated other stores, in CORRECT context.
I've explained the pitfalls from the end-user point of view with a store going the Steam key route here:

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/if_the_games_were_losing_are_drmfree_elsewhere_why_do_we_care_that_gogs_losing_them/post16

That in mind, it is understandable many prefer GOG.com not going the Steam-key route, especially since there already are many other places that already do that already. Going that route usually seems to be the death knell to the stores own services, like we have already seen in e.g. GamersGate, GreenManGaming and largely also Humble Bundle. Over time, they have more and more moved to offering also Steam-only games, and winding down their own service.

From GOG's point of view, the probable reason would be that they rather push their own service, while they still believe in it. Offering Steam keys has the risk of giving the impression you don't believe in the survival of your own service anymore. The same reason why EA Origin is not offering Steam keys on top of any games you buy in Origin. You are not denouncing EA for not offering Steam keys in Origin, are you?

koima57: Your version falls apart, what a shame..
Facts are on my side, you be honest now.
OR I welcome you (again) to scan all of my forum history, be my guest.
Either prove your claims or eat them back. And you do eat them back by my words, what ever you try... :)
Stay classy, folks!
And this from a person who complains to others for their alleged "holier-than-thou" attitude. :^P

I don't find it classy at all from your likes to denounce people for liking what GOG does, in the GOG forum no less.

@timppu

Off topic, to muddy the waters.

I provided my original messages, since you quoted my words TOTALLY out of context.

I requested you support your claims with evidence, for portraying me as you do..?

My post already proved you wrong doing this, using false quotations of my words against me.

I don't hold my breath, and you do eat back your wrong accusations by my word, again.

Regards.

And in my message I provided links to various earlier messages from you (look for the underlined words or sentences, they are embedded links). Sorry if you missed them.

It is not a false accusation that you seem to have some huge chip on your shoulder for GOG.com promoting the DRM-free releases, and many users praising GOG for that.

Just let it go, get over it. I am not sure how you e.g. feel about today's Paradox releases. Annoyed? Even more annoyed seeing so many users being happy about them, and voicing it out loud?

Oh, I noticed and followed them.

I only found you misquoting me to prove your imagined griefs, I allegedly harbor so angrily.

I tell you. I do not. Accept it and quit bothering me with this, now. Low rate my post and move on.

Sorry, I don't do downrepping, like you do.

You act like a victim if you are downrepped, while admitting you downrep other users.
I prefer GoG as I believe supporting healthy competition will bring long term benefits for all gamers. Also I do like GoG approach to old games when they actually make sure they work on modern systems instead of shamelessly selling non compatible games like Steam does.

A few posts below, how I actually, and very casually behave on that specific matter.

Reasonably cool, right? Why hand-picking out of context, altering the real meaning of my words...? No comment.

arxon: instead of shamelessly selling non compatible games like Steam does.
I could't agree more!

Just bought Rome II and didn't work. Tried to complain? They say:

"Talk to SEGA"

Awesome

:D
Simple answer: Not to Steam.

But I don't want to say anything already said so I'm going to say something new:

I have exactly 300 games on my Steam library right now
, but the moment I achieve World Domination I don't care for my upcoming hypocritical double standards any more and I will purge Steam, Gabe and Valve from the annals of the history and go on a witch hunt persecuting every steam user with my secret police, torturing them with all sorts of my sadistically devises torture mechanisms I will invent for the occasion.

If that doesn't convince you yet I may inform you that in any case as an avatar of Yog Sototh I will haunt you in your dreams until you grow increasingly insane losing your grip on reality. As the ancient scriptures have foretold I will primarily target Steam users. Because of reasons that are of a non-euclidic geometry that mere mortals wouldn't understand.

Well if you still aren't convinced by these two threats you might found out that steam users are rather delusional (as proven by my example) and you probably don't want to be one of those...

So get the f*ck away from that horrible platform while you can...

One thing that I have noticed, generally (there are always exceptions) The younger generation tend to favor Steam for the I gotta have it now group. On the other hand, if you grew up seeing an Apollo rocket lift off and played with a trash80 or C64 or even a 386 or 486, you tend to not like steam.

We Oldies like to have physical copies, when we can and are not too worried about an occasional disconnect, as long as we can play the games that we bought. We like the feel of ownership and not feel like we have bought a subscription that can be yanked away on a whim.

Any thoughts?

I have had a Vic20, grew up on Atari 2600,NES &SNES & have fond memories of the family 486 w/Win 95

so as an "Oldie" I feel like a GOG "purchase" is more genuine than a buying Steam game on disc even though on a level playing field I would choose disc over Digital Distribution.

So for me it breaks down like

-Acceptable-
no DRM disc
GOG Digital Distribution
-not acceptable-
Steam (or other DRM) Disc
Steam (or other DRM) Digital Distribution

I grew up with an Atari800XL... Hearing the soft humming of the disk drive as it loads up your games and programs was always sorta fun. Naturally the 286-486's are there, but they don't quite have the same feel as the Atari did..

Hmm grew up with more emulators than consoles though...
